Photos from Janet's second roll of film. Will leave to her to add the written commentary around the photos, but it appears that we had a "ghost in the machine" with the mysterious inclusion of bubble wrap in some of the latter photos. Weird mon...must have got in there when I changed her flat flash batteries in our camera dark bag.

34. “Margaret River Bush”. Down at Margaret River for the weekend, meeting with our architect and builder at our block of land down there. We drove down on Friday night and despite looking for a shot all the way down there, it wasn’t until we got to Hilltop Cottages and the surrounding bush that I saw my shot – the late afternoon light shining on the spiky bush plants. Unfortunately the shot is sort of lost between the adjacent photos.
35. “New Vines @ Xanadu”. Last night I dreamt I was Moby Dick. I was harpooned and went on a murderous spree of revenge – unending whaling ships and drowning their crews. Back in real life we had lunch at Xanadu winery after visiting our block and discussing plans with Mike and Stephen, the architect and builder. I noticed that the vines were just beginning to get new growth and so I took this shot to finally celebrate Spring.
36. “Soap at Margaret River”. More normal dreams last night, thankfully. After breakfast we went into Margaret River for a coffee. There was a small craft market in town and we bought some hand-made soap. The liked the colours and the arrangement of the soaps, so I snapped this shot, taken from the hip, so the framing was potentially hit and miss. But is came out OK, sort of straddling the vines and the next shot.
37. “Distracted”. Back at work after the weekend at Margaret River. It felt like a distracted kind of day, thinking more of our proposed house in the country than of work stuff. Riding home, I remembered that I needed to take a photograph on when I got to Oxford Street. Definitely a distracted kind of day…

29. City to Surf Start. I used to run in the City to Surf until my knees packed in. But I remember the excitement of the start and the rush of adrenaline that gets you up that first hill. And how your lungs feel like bursting at the top and you haven’t even run one km yet! I tried to include some of the red flowers of the African Coral tree in the shot because they always remind me of early spring in South Africa, but they got lost in the exposure.
30. “Monday Night Double at the Luna”. It was Monday night, so I thought that this was an appropriate shot. I used a flash, plus an extended exposure as the light was fading. As it turned out, I overexposed the shot and you can’t see the sign advertising the films. Only when I got home did I that I should have taken a double exposure, rather than a single, long exposure. That would be have been a better play on words. Curses.
31. This shot was originally called “Tiger Tiger – Clare”, but she didn’t come out in the exposure, thanks to the overexposure of the frame before, so the shot is now called “Tiger Tiger – where is Clare?”. Will have to try again sometime…
32. “Man in Black @ the Regal”. September 1st – The first Day of Spring!. I had planned to take a photograph of flowers in celebration. But I didn’t find any flowers in bloom when I went out at lunchtime. So in the end I photographed the Regal Theatre when we went to see Tex Perkins in “The Man in Black”. Need to get the lyrics to “Hurt”.
33. “Women in Black @ Wesley”. The day almost felt like Spring. I like the contrast between the Women in Black holding at peaceful protest at Wesley Cathedral and the show from the previous night, so I asked the women if I could take their photograph.

23. … I rode past the Apple shop and decided to take a photo of the logo and the shop lights behind. I am rather pleased with the perspective of the lights within the shot.
24. “L for Luna”. I saw that it was a big full moon this evening as I rode home. I didn’t have a chance to photography anything during the day, so I thought I would shoot the big L in the window of the Luna Cinema on Oxford Street. I was worried about the reflection of the flash in the window, but it seemed to have come out OK.
25. “Pounce on the Day” On the way to work I stopped in at “Tiger Tiger” and saw this sign – “Pounce on the day, it’s the Tiger Tiger way”. The association with Tigger from Winnie the Poo brought on a flood of childhood memories so the photo of the day was a no brainer.
26. I had wandered around the city at lunchtime looking for an interesting shot, but nothing caught my eye. On the way home we stopped at the local IGA for provisions. Outside was a shiny silver-grey scooter parked in the sunlight and I decided that this would be my shot of the day.
27. Friday Night Bistro. Janet had invited our German friend Norbit for dinner. But a quiet dinner for three soon grew into a lavish affair for nine as word spread over the course of the next few days. Janet cooked a fillet with goose fat drenched roast potatoes and salad. Worth a shot. I captured Karen and Peter in the photo.
28. Another slowish Saturday after the Friday Night Bistro event, although I did manage to go cycling in the morning. Spent the day tidying up and doing some housework. Then went to Distracted in the afternoon where Janet was getting her hair done. Natalie (who owns Distracted) and Patience (who works there) are both pregnant. It was Patience’s last day of work, so I was lucky to get a photo of both of them together.

  1. I think about taking a photograph of the old dead trees scattered in the fields along the side of the highway.
  2. The Artrage building on James Street was bathed in late afternoon sun. I took this photo trying to avoid the passing car (an failed) and include the pedestrian (and just made it).
  3. This was supposed to be a photo of the “High Priestess” but I think I must have left the lens cap on because I just got black – and now a discontinuity between negatives…
  4. 21st August - Election Day. We were up at 5am to work at a polling station in Beeliar. I took this photo of the women from the local school P&A association who were hosting a fund raising sausage sizzle at the polling station. They played 80’s and 90’s music, which provided nostalgic memories during a long day. Melissa retained her seat, but her victory was tempered by heavy ALP losses elsewhere. The after party was a rather somber affair.
  5. Post Election Blues – It looks like we will have a hung parliament for the first time since, like forever. No one feels like a winner. We slept in and I finally ventured out into the cold sunshine to get bread and milk for breakfast. The sun was shining through the New Norcia Bakery window and cast a beautiful shadow of writing across the loaves of bread inside the display.
